In early 1916 The Dorset Yeomanry,as part of the Western Frontier Force, were involved in clearing parts of Egypt from Senussiforces encouraged by Germany and led by Turkish Officers.

On February 26th, Aerial Reconnaissance identified an enemy force in Sidi Barrani. A column was dispatched and the regiment found itself isolated. They faced an enemy rear guard of 600 men armed with rifles and four machine guns. 196 Yeoman charged for over half a mile over open desert and in spite of taking many casualties, routed the enemy and captured their leader, General Jaafa Pasha.

This action brought to a victorious end the campaign in Western Egypt. Later, Jaafa Pasha said.... 'No one but British Cavalry would have done it.'
