My latest addition World War One British Family Group

William George Bates
William Arthur Bates
Gilbert Bates

I had originally thought brothers / cousins, but William George Bates service records survive as part of the WO 363 Burnt Records & Pension Records. He is actually the father of William and Gilbert.

Having checked the 1901 Census all three are living at the same address 101 West Wycombe Road.

William George Bates, 1914-15 Star Trio.

Enlisted 16/4/15 aged 52, 3rd Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Had previous service of 4 years in the regiment.
Transferred to Labour Corps August 1915 no longer fit, due to sprain left ankle joint.
Discharged April 1918.

52 a fair old age to enlist.

William Arthur Bates, 1914-15 Star Trio.

Appears on the 1911 census as Corporal 1st Bn Ox & Bucks LI, by outbreak of war Sergeant.
The other two are still living at the 1901 address.
The 1st Battalion served in Mesopotamia, and the whole Battalion was captured after surrender of garrison at Kut-el-Amara.
He died in a Turkish Prisoner of War camp 24/9/16.

Gilbert Bates, Pair.

Served in the 5th Bn Ox & Bucks LI.
Killed in Action 24 August 1916, one of 39 other ranks killed in an attack on Delville Wood, Somme
War Diary confirms attack and capture of 200+ Germans and one machine gun.

There was a third brother Edward Victor Bates who was 13 in 1911, so every possibility he saw War Service, there is a medal roll for an Edward Victor Bates, Royal Sussex Regiment but no service record survives so unable to confirm. He survived but discharged due to wounds.

A family group and like so many, a tragic outcome.
