In 1939 the German army went to a slightly subdued insignia to include a light grey colored eagle on a dark green back. This lasted for about a year.

Hello,

In 1940 the Heer changed there facing color to fieldgrey and their insignia became subdued. Here is a 1940 enlisted breast eagle, uncut, and then a cut and folded one. These breast eagles come in various shades of field grey.

They also had a flatwire eagle on a fieldgrey base material. Here is an uncut example and a cut and folded one.
