Untouched SD Heer M40

I didn’t even remember having this Heer  SD M40 and I’ve unearthed it this morning inside a box in the back of one of my garages while getting rid of old bike parts and empty cans.It was sitting on a shelf at a guy’s workshop when I found it many years ago .His father found this helmet in the 60s when he went to see an old car to restore and stuff in sheds was still plentiful.
Before putting it away I cleaned it from decades of caked greasy dust and soot only to discover that the paint was like when the helmet was still in use, including the chipping on the dome with the exposed metal devoid of any oxidations. The only issue were a few dozens of very small flecks of blue and red paints and a two major drippings the size of 2€ coins right over the rear rivet and a similar one  on the right temple, which I partly and very carefully cleaned with the help of a few q-tips a tin of organic thinner and scraping the small dots with the very tip of a surgical blade, leaving the smaller ones with the intention of cleaning them later, but they are still there and could be VERY EASILY scraped off with the tip of a cutter blade.Thank God it wasn’t thinned paint but IMO it was the thick goo sometimes found under the lids or on the bottom of the cans.I haven’t hit the paint with the thinner around the rivets to avoid the risk of having runs inside the shell!😰
The chinstrap is RBNr’d with a steel buckle and it’s original to the helmet. It was tucked inside so luckily no paint to speak of on this one.
The lining is complete but the tip of one of the“fingers” is broken and the black ink oval dome stamp is still visible.
The rivets are original to the helmet,of course. One has lost its paint to show the zinc finish while the others still have the original paint on them.
As luck would have had it no paint drippings damaged the nice decal if not for a couple of nearly invisible  micro-flecks that I’ve obviously left alone since they’re virtually unnoticeable.

And a dam nice old combat veteran it is Manny It has just the right amount of wear to make it interesting speak's of heavy use in the field and or theatre of operations..As to the rest of the paint it is hardly noticeable and I would leave it be as it does not distract from this helmet IMHO..

Yes Dave,it’s an “out of woodwork” helmet coming out of the woodwork 😅

Having been covered with a layer of greasy stuff for such a long time both the decal and the bare metal have been preserved and the steel has a very peculiar “bonderised/parkerised” look to it.I don’t have many helmets but all of them make me sleep nice and tight, including the few camos!

Hi Ian,

I’m happy to have unearthed this lid because I had really  forgot about it.I’ve got boxes full of stored stuff and each has the contents written on it but I must had put it inside one at the very last moment or as an  afterthought!🤷‍♂️
