Funksammler
The FuG17 (FuG XVII) installation was the first VHF aircraft radio developed for the Luftwaffe in 1938. It was used in short range reconnaissance aircraft such as the Hs 126 and Fw 189 and could be used to communicate with the ground based FU7 installation (Ukw.E.d1 + 20 W.S.d): With the Hs 236 having a crew of two and the Fw 189 a crew or three, the FuG17 contained an intercom amplifier so that either the pilot or the radio operator could use the radio. The EZ4 direction finder could also be connected to the intercom system. The radio operator used the switch on the radio to choose between radio (Ft) or intercom (EiV) An U17 power supply, a switch box for each crew member, a morse key (the FuG17 could transmit either morse code or voice) and an antenna tuner completed the installation: The radio operator used the switch box on the left. He could switch off the intercom (Aus), listen in to the communication by the pilot (Smith), switch on the intercom (EiV) or transmit (Send). While the pilot was permanently connected to the intercom and could transmit his voice commands (Telefunken. Send) The basic design of the FuG 17 was used to develop a multitude of FuG17 and FuG16 models (the numbering sequence of the Luftwaffe radio sets does not always indicate order of introduction).
