An introduction to FU vehicle radio sets

The German army gave each radio set a "FU" designation, in a similar way that the US army described their complete sets as "SCR". The "FU" sets of the army are not to be confused with the "FuG" sets used by the Luftwaffe. The FU sets included the receivers and transmitters, their power supplies and cables. The equipment in a FU set was sometimes updated with more modern equipment. During the war the FU sets would contain:

FU1*: Torn.E.b receiver** + E.W.c power supply

FU2*: Ukw.E.e receiver + E.U.a power supply

FU3*: Ukw.E.d1 receiver + E.U.a power supply

FU4*: Mw.E.c receiver + E.U.a power supply

FU5: Ukw.E.e receiver + 10 W.S.c transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U10 power supply

FU5 (Luft): Ukw.E.m receiver + 10 W.S.m transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U10 power supply

FU6: Ukw.E.e receiver + 20 W.S.c transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U20 power supply

FU7: Ukw.e.d1 receiver + 20 W.S.d transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U20 power supply

FU8: Mw.E.c receiver + 30 W.S.a transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U30b power supply

FU9: Torn.E.b receiver* + 5 W.S.a transmitter + E.W.c power supply + U5 power supply

FU10***: Torn.E.b receiver + 30 W.S transmitter + E.W.c power supply + U30 power supply

FU11: Torn.E.b receiver* + 100 W.S. transmitter + E.W.c power supply + U100 power supply

FU12: Mw.E.c receiver + 80 W.S. transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U80 power supply

FU13: 2 x Ukw.E.e receiver + 20 W.S.c transmitter + 2x E.U.a power supply + U20 power supply

FU14****: 10 x Torn.E.b + 3 x Kw.E.a + 2 x Fu.H.E.a + 2 x Fu.H.E.b + 2 x Fu.H.E.c + 2 x Fu.H.E.d receivers + associated power supplies

FU15*: Ukw.E.h receiver + E.U.a power supply

FU16: Ukw.E.h receiver + 10 W.S.h transmitter + E.U.a power supply + U10 power supply

FU17: Torn.Fu.h tranceiver

FU18*****: 4 x Ukw.E.b1 receivers + 4 x 20 W.S.b transmitters + receiver rack power supply + 4 x U20b power supply

FU19: 15 W.S.E.a/b tranceiver + E.W.d power supply + U15 power supply + KV15 box

FU20: Torn.E.b receiver + 80 W.S.a transmitter + E.W.c power supply + U80 power supply

FU21: Kw.E.a receiver + 225 W.S.F41 + E.W.d power supply + transmitter power supply

FU22: Torn.E.b receiver + 30 W.S.a transmitter + E.W.c power supply + U30b power supply

FU23: No data available

FU24: 2 x Torn.E.b receivers + 15 W.S.E.a/b tranceivers + 2 x E.W.c power supply + U15 power supply

FU25: Radione R3 receiver + L70K39 transmitter + mains power converter

* FU1 to FU4 + FU15 were receiver sets only. They were sometimes added to receiver/transmitter sets, for example tanks were often fitted with FU2/FU5 meaning two Ukw.E.e receivers + one 10 W.S.c transmitter

** Until 1937 the Telefunken E 445 Bs receiver was used, after 1937 the Telefunken Torn.E.b receiver

*** the FU10 used a pre-war type 30 Watt transmitter which is different from the 30 W.S.a transmitter. It was mainly used in early armoured reconnaissance cars like the Sd.Kfz 223. The FU22 used the 30 W.S.a and was given a separate FU set name.

**** FU14 was a large set of receivers covering the long, medium and short wave spectrum to equip a motorised radio monitoring unit

***** FU18 was a set used by artillery sound ranging units. The four receivers were mounted in a rack with power supply, loudspeaker and were connected to a chart recorder. The four transmitters were placed in the field in different places to record the sound of enemy artillery batteries.

Use of colours: long/medium/short wave sets; long wave sets; medium wave sets; short wave sets; VHF sets, VHF sets of ground/air cooperation
