This is so cool, I have had this pre WW2 French soldiers wallet for some years, have looked it over many times, but this morning found a pocket I never noticed before, had this envelope in it.

I can read and speak a bit of French...so the envelope is written -

Mister Dutang

4th Company a Reservist from Chaumont....(I have been to Chaumont many times)

I, hope this helps?

Yes I think you could be right Tony,  but what a great find, always the same, you buy a military coat, uniform, case etc etc.....you never know what you may find inside that the person selling it thinks it's rubbish!

Well done on you finding this as it says so much about the owner, his rank etc etc.

Take Care...Ian

Hello Tony,

This could also mean - report for duty at the army barracks at Chaumont. Obviously he had completed his 1 year in the Army (that all Frenchmen are obligated to do....even my mates in France 20 years ago had to, as it was obliged (under order) to complete their Military Service) One mate of mine was in tanks, one in Paratroopers and others in different regiments to the French Army,.

So, Then this ex-soldier was re-called for his services during WW1/ WW2.....(Bloody Hell....I need to learn French much better!!!)

Very best wishes....IanB/ UK
