Guys,

My German pal has just turfed this out of his uncles tool shed.

Anyone any idea, I thought perhaps some sort of butchers blade?!

Hello Rich,

Nice item, as far as I know in England it's called a"Billhook" for cutting down branches, small trees and for chopping up small pieces of wood to light the fire---kindling. It should have a hook (as it's called) at the very end - curved.

I, hope im nearly right?

Thanks for showing us and best to you

Have a look at this Rich on Ebay UK....they used these "choppers" or small axes for many years before WW1...but the canteen/ cookers who had to cook the food during WW1 had only wood to use, so they used these to cut small pieces of wood to get the fire .....Probably with a drop of parrafin to get it sparked up, as well as those in the trenches would use these to cut the wood/ kindling for the braziers ... to keep warm.

They are selling same as your at about £45....good!

Just to mention Rich,

see if the man you got it from can find the leather cover for it, it's worth a lot more and very rare to find!
