Richard Auld
Guys, Just for a bit of fun and to add context to a parallel thread. Here is a 1990 field painted British Mk 6 combat helmet, combat used all be it for only 100 hours , ok for a start I suppose! The background is that troops were deployed to the Middle East, this surprised the logistical chain (as always it was to transpire) and initially the troops were ill equipped. Troops recieved the desert helmet cover but they were for the most part too small and would not fit the average helmet only small sizes. It is not unusual to see soldier pictured with helmet covers affixed with 'Harry Black' masking tape. Same with uniform detail and it is not unusual to see soldiers pictured wearing Desert DPM and Woodland DPM mixed! This helmet was painted at the same time as the veh, thrown on top and sprayed with the rest of the crews helmets in Saudi Arabia! It was then later touched up with more paint and a brush. The genaral condition of the helmet is as it was after 6 months deployment and daily use. Notice the lack of care in application of the camoflage since it was just another shiet job to do but note the functional effect. Note the grime and dirt on the liner, there was not a lot of water or time to wash and on other days there was! Or as I remember it we were in training or combat and you just got on with it! The rather childish application of the AfrikaKorp plam with Staedler middle sized green permanent marker was an experssion of individuality and a sign of naivity of what was about to start.
