I practiced Wicca at one time, Samhain (sowen) was what we celebrated, I know when the Irish came to the US, they originally carved turnips, the pumpkin came later. Halloween was and still is one of my favorite times.

We also carved turnips in Scotland when I was a kid, probably because back then pumpkins were a bit unknown and turnip was cheep, my granny always made turnip soup with a sheeps head for stock as we were a bit poor back then, not much better off now but times change LOL!
