Compass - Need Help with Identification

Kiwi

Recommended Posts

I have what I believe is a German Marching Compass but, beyond that, I have no further info. The compass is graduated in Mils and is marked on the dial "West - Ost" which suggests German origin but I can find no other marks identifying a maker or indicating age. Can anyone help?

Is there anything on the base marking wise?

It is German of course with the wording.

I haven't seen one like this that I remember but there were many different 'private purchase' models available.

If it is WW2 I would place it in that category.

It could also be East German or WW1?

Rich,

That's the problem, there are no markings whatsoever. Forgive my ignorance but what does "private purchase" mean in this context? Bought by civilians rather than by the military?

Regards.

Civilian produced for the military market. Not a military issue pattern. Still a nice compass though! There were many differnt types made aimed at the Hitler Youth, SA, RAD, Military etc as near all of those organisations had 'paramilitary training'. I have in my mind somewhere that it might be East German? You could explore that avenue?

Rich,

Thanks for that. I'll try the East German angle.

Regards.
