WW2 German gas mask markings

So my father in law was doing so.e repair work in an attic in Warsaw, Poland a few years back and came across this German gas mask and canister among some other things. Being a collector, he gave it to me. I was wondering what the white numbers indicate on the mask and canister. Although the canister's markings are basically gone, the remnants are still there. Do these indicate serial number? Were they put on by an armory? Why not stamped? Thanks for any insight.
