From a site that I'm licensed to dig on I recovered this no 80,13 pounder shrapnel shell fuze.

It's to all intense and purposes brand new although it has been entombed in airless mud for nearly 100 years it was still free and moving .

Marked no 80 mkv11  11/17 VSM it still had its original leather sealing washer intact ,so I am pulling this apart to give it a complete restoration and would like to share with you.

Nothing live or nasty was found within this fuze so totally ffe

Nice find. Thick clay like that is great at preserving relics......but a SOD to dig through!

All the components of the 80 are now cleaned And ready for assembly.

There was no firing mechanism within the body which tells me this came from the factory and dumped more or less in situe as I've since brought up a 2pounder fuze and an 18 pounder He fuze ,and the strangest one was a sectioned Vickers Armstrong model A from 1860 ,all empty and free from any substance and firing mechsnisms.

I've cleaned this leaving a frosted look ,as polishing them to death takes away the originality .
